Matauranga, producción consciente

La industria láctea en Nueva Zelanda es causante de la destrucción de bosques nativos, de la contaminación de napas de agua y contribuyente de gases de efecto invernadero. ¿Puede lo que se está haciendo ahora seguir ejecutándose de la misma manera de aquí a 100 años? De la mano de la cultura maorí está la respuesta.

Imagínate esto: conductores de noticieros alrededor del mundo reportando atónitos una epidemia. Gran parte de los más de 32 millones vacas y ovejas en Nueva Zelanda se volvieron zombies.
Muchos de los 4,5 millones de habitantes ya están infectados y también muerden1.
¡Catástrofe! No puede haber un desastre natural peor que éste para un país… ¿o sí?

La Amazonía en Brasil está desapareciendo bajo topadoras y fuegos de variable grado de clandestinidad. El Gran Arrecife de Australia se despedaza lentamente, bañado en aguas más ácidas, producto del aumento de temperatura a escala global. ¿Y Nueva Zelanda? A no ser por alguna pequeña mención de lo linda y pura que es la naturaleza, las montañas, las playas o los All Blacks, no sale en las noticias. Greenpeace no va con sus barcos a hacer bardo, así que tan mal no debe estar.

O podríamos considerar que muchos problemas suelen pasarse por alto en los medios hegemónicos de comunicación a menos que contengan un fuerte componente escandaloso o morboso (especialmente cuando hay fuertes intereses económicos detrás). Y que a veces lo que se muestra, lo que se ve, engaña. Hagamos una prueba: de este lado hay una foto de vaquitas
simpáticas pastando sobre un campo verdísimo, del otro una fábrica opaca, impersonal. ¿Cuál quiero ver desde la ventana de mi comedor? La respuesta es casi demasiado fácil. Sospechosamente fácil.

Examinemos los hechos. La industria láctea de Nueva Zelanda representa alrededor de un 20% de la economía total de esta pequeña nación oceánica. Un montón.2 Además del dinero, representa muchos miles de empleos y un elemento esencial de la cultura e idiosincrasia de estas islas, no muy distinto a gran parte de Sudamérica. Desafortunadamente, también es la causa de que, por ejemplo, hoy sólo existan 18% de los bosques originales del Waikato, la principal región lechera.

Y aún hay más. Los desechos líquidos y sólidos de las vacas contienen compuestos (especialmente nitratos y fosfatos) que se filtran al suelo y eventualmente alcanzan las napas y ríos. La escala de este problema es enorme: se estima que remover dichos elementos de fuentes de agua en Nueva Zelanda hasta alcanzar niveles aptos para consumo humano requeriría una inversión de 10000 millones de dólares.3 En otras palabras, arreglar los daños cuesta más que el dinero que ingresa por exportaciones.

Algo similar pasa con el impacto de emisiones (gases) del ganado. Sorprendentemente, los eructos de esas pacíficas vacas de las fotos producen casi la mitad del total de gases invernaderos de este país.3

¿Cuál es la solución entonces? Una posibilidad es 1) matar a todas las vacas, luego 2) multar y perseguir a los granjeros y terratenientes para que paguen el daño ambiental consecuencia de su lucro, y finalmente 3) volvernos cazadores-recolectores neo-hippies, reivindicando a la diosa Gaia. Lástima que las estrategias radicales y binarias (blanco/negro) ya no están de moda. Hay soluciones menos hollywoodenses (¿?) pero con mucho potencial.

Resolver problemas complejos requiere de gente diversa pensando y haciendo en conjunto. En AgResearch, el instituto donde trabajo (se dedica a agricultura y biotecnología de NZ), se ven signos para ser optimista.

En primer lugar, el gobierno de Nueva Zelanda invierte más de U$S 800 millones al año en ciencia. Parte de ese dinero financia investigación en sistemas agrícolas, incentivando cambios en políticas de uso de tierras y ayudando a los productores a implementar estrategias sustentables con mínimas reducciones de producción.

Otra parte de los fondos se destina a mejoramiento animal (selección de animales más saludables y productivos, y que producen menos desechos) y vegetal (cultivos y pasturas más resistentes a sequías, inundaciones y plagas). También se estudian alternativas menos convencionales: nuevos cultivos, producción de insectos como fuente de proteína, plantar arbustos nativos en campos que originalmente eran de monocultivo, ¡incluso usar drones inteligentes armados de láser para controlar plagas!4

Otra opción inmensamente atractiva proviene de la investigación en turismo. Combinar naturaleza, producción, protección cultural y sustentabilidad puede ser la clave al dilema “desarrollo económico” vs “cuidado ambiental”. 5

Mencionar la interacción entre cultura, ambiente y recursos nos lleva a considerar un aspecto especialmente subestimado en muchas sociedades modernas: la sabiduría ancestral aborigen. Originario de Nueva Zelanda, el pueblo maorí desarrolló un sistema de valores llamado “matauranga”, cuya idea central es la unidad (kotahitanga) indisoluble entre humano, cultura y naturaleza; ningún elemento puede funcionar por sí sólo si hay desequilibrios en los otros.

La cosmovisión y filosofía aborígenes son campos apasionantes, pero las aplicaciones en la práctica pueden ser un desafío. Un ejemplo exitoso es el “Trofeo Ahuwhenua”, instituido en 1933 para promover la sustentabilidad por sobre la simple productividad neta6. “Ahuwhenua” es una palabra Maori que se traduce tanto como “laborioso” y “consciente”, y da cuenta del esfuerzo que conlleva producir de manera sostenible. Un panel mixto (gobierno, iwi (tribus), instituciones científicas y cooperativas) premia anualmente a productores Maori en base a sus esfuerzos de manaaki (protección) y kaitikitanga (tutela) de la tierra, así como por el ambiente humano y cultural dentro del emprendimiento y en relación con los productores vecinos (manakitanga).

Otros premios están abiertos a todos los productores agropecuarios del país7. Estas competencias reconocen especialmente medidas de reforestación y reducción de impacto ambiental pero también incorporando otros aspectos, como la calidad de vida de los trabajadores y la adopción de nueva tecnología (aquí pueden ver los detalles de cada competencia7.) No es sencillo estimar el impacto de iniciativas como éstas, pero dos parámetros son muy positivos: el número de participantes crece año tras año, y todos ellos obtienen asesoramiento gratuito por parte de expertos sobre cómo producir más y mejor sin dañar el ambiente. Globalmente, se trabaja arduamente con la siguiente pregunta-desafío en mente: “¿puede lo que se está haciendo ahora seguir ejecutándose de la misma manera de aquí a 100 años?”.

Volviendo a la situación inicial, ¿hay algo peor que una plaga de animales domésticos zombies? Sí, producir con la mente en la billetera en lugar de en el río de al lado o el pasto del jardín. ¿Todo está perdido? No, para nada. Pero grandes problemas requieren esfuerzos sustanciales; requieren gobiernos comprometidos con la ciencia, que respeten y aprendan de la cosmovisión indígena. Requieren de productores sensatos que piensen en los hijos de sus hijos. Y fundamentalmente, requieren de consumidores conscientes.
